Education and Representation: Homeschool Toys and Activities Your Kids Will Love

We’ve been fortunate enough to homeschool/road school our boys Faruq (7yo) and Cire (2yo). We like to create learning opportunities everywhere we can, so it’s important that we provide toys that enhance an experience as unique as theirs. Recently, we were lucky enough to receive a few gifts from some brands that we love. The first item we received was from Skillmatics. They are an extremely popular, award-winning toy and game company for kids. I love their brand because they are dedicated to creating playful learning experiences for kids of all ages. They have a wide variety of games that are perfect for family game nights. Faruq loves the “Guess in 10: Animal Planet” game and Cire has been learning the basics with the “Flash Cards: Letters, Numbers, Shapes & Colors.” Since we’re always on the go, having these durable, compact options on hand for a road trip or plane ride is great. Skillmatics also values sustainability, which is something that aligns with our values.

The second toy brand we’ve been loving recently is Puzzle Huddle, a Black-owned brand focused on diverse and unique puzzle designs. We don’t often see ethnic faces on commercial toys, so it’s important that our kids see themselves reflected in their play and learning activities. Representation matters, and toys like Puzzle Huddle just get it! We’ve had so much fun with their “Chemistry Boy” and “Super Hero Courage” puzzles. We love the designs because they further the conversation on diversity, education, and career opportunities. I’m also convinced puzzles are one of the best activities for fine motor skills and brain development. The best part is that it’s a quiet activity (Yay!) that requires focus and encourages self-discipline to complete. Before baby Cire, puzzles were my favorite option to keep Faruq quietly occupied for up to 45 mins. A win-win, thanks Puzzle Huddle!

Last but not least, Brown Joy Co was kind enough to send us their Ultimate Sticker Collection Set. This is another Black-owned brand that values representation, worthiness and normalcy of seeing Black and Brown characters in everyday items like stickers. As we mentioned before, it’s crucial that children of color see themselves in a positive light, and that is what Brown Joy Co is all about. My son Faruq said, “I’ve never seen stickers of brown children before.” He loves these stickers, and that is why we’re so happy to share this brand with you!

We are so grateful to receive such wonderful gifts for our boys. We try to be very mindful of our parenting choices and the toys/activities we give them. We want our boys to have fun, but we also want to be intentional. And we think all three of these brands are a perfect fit for our family and homeschooling style. They align with our values and provide fun learning experiences for Faruq and Cire. We are glad that we got the opportunity to collaborate with such impactful brands! If you have a brand we should highlight next, please send us a message.
